LocalTheatreNY.com to be media partner with John Chatterton and The Midtown International Theatre Festival's
Second Annual Midwinter Madness Short Play Festival
John Chatterton and The Midtown International Theatre Festival (MITF) are pleased to announce the Second Annual Midwinter Madness Short Play Festival from February 13 through March 4, 2012.
The Festival will take place at Roy Arias Studios' Payan Theatre, 300 W. 43rd St., 5th fl. Tickets (at $14 and $17, depending on a play's length; no discounts for seniors or students) are available at www.SmartTix.com (search by play title) or by calling 212/868-4444.
"I have a passion for short plays. With the Short Play Lab throughout the season and the MITF's Short Subjects in the summer, and the Midwinter Madness Short Play Festival in the winter, it's all short play all year 'round!" said John Chatterton.
In addition to a tie-in with the MITF Short Subjects, the Midwinter Madness Short Play Festival also echoes the MITF with some international plays, notably CIRCO POEIRA ("Dust Circus"), a solo play with puppets all the way from Brazil (written and directed by Caio Stolai; produced by Milena Nascimento). ONE OUT OF TEN, a play about immigrants in Greece, (originally created by Laertis Vasiliou; translated and directed by Aktina Stathak). (For a complete list of plays CLICK HERE)

13th ANNUAL MIDTOWN INTERNATIONAL THEATRE FESTIVAL -2012
The Midtown International Theatre Festival (MITF) presented another MITF Symposium on Thursday, January 26, 2012 at 7pm at The June Havoc Theatre in the Abingdon Theatre Arts Complex, 312 W 36th St., first floor, NYC. Admission was FREE.
Panelist at The MITF Symposium - January 26thThis year's Symposium featured a panel of Festival staff and previous Festival participants. The panel discussed the Festival and the reasons to choose the Festival. There was a short presentation followed by a question-and-answer session; the panelists then were available after the symposium to address individual concerns and questions.
"We had a useful meeting last time [in December 2011]," said John Chatterton, executive producer of the MITF, "but we feel we need to continue reaching out to our constituency if we want to keep expanding. We'll also be adding a second application deadline of Feb. 17, to accommodate attendees of the January Symposium."
The thirteenth season will run from July 17 - Aug. 12, 2012. Applications for the 2012 season are currently available online at www.midtownfestival.org.
The Festival accepts submissions in all genres - any sort of stage play, musical or otherwise, new or classic, mainstream or specifically focused on an ethnic or cultural niche, including solo shows. To be eligible, each show must have a producer and production team attached to the project. In addition, the MITF will include a Short Subjects division.
Mr. Chatterton created the MITF in 2000, a Midtown alternative to other theatre festivals, as a way to present the finest off-off Broadway talent in convenience, comfort, and safety. The MITF's artistic emphasis is on the script itself and therefore the Festival requests minimal production values. It styles itself as "the festival that cares," because of its high ratio of paid staff to participants compared to other festivals.
In addition to Mr. Chatterton, this year's panel included Gerald vanHeerden, one of the Festival's artistic directors; Jamibeth Margolis, MITF artistic director for musicals; Erica Ruff, producer of last season's ALICE: A NEW MUSICAL; Andrew Barbato, writer/director of last season's ALICE: A NEW MUSICAL; and Michael Tester.
Application forms for the Midtown International Theatre Festival are available online at www.midtownfestival.org. Completed applications, scripts, production materials and a non-refundable reading fee of $30 (none for Short Subjects) must be mailed to: The Midtown International Theatre Festival, 2578 Broadway #145, New York, NY 10025. Pricing plans for shows vary. Details may be found at www.midtownfestival.org.
The 2012 Festival will take place at the June Havoc Theatre, 312 W. 36th Street, 1st floor; the Dorothy Strelsin Theatre, 312 W. 36th Street, 1st floor; the Main Stage Theater, 312 W. 36th Street, 4th floor; and the Jewel Box Theater, 312 W. 36th Street, 4th floor.
Further information about the MITF can be found in the Festival Manual at www.midtownfestival.org.

NEW YORK, December 19 -- The Roy Arias Studios & Theaters, located in the Times Square Arts Center at 300 West 43rd Street, will present the first Times Square International Theater Festival from January 16 to 22, 2012.
Coinciding with this festival, the complex is addressing shortage of flexible, experimental, curated performance venues in Midtown by recommissioning its fourth floor theater space (74 seats) as the Little Times Square Theatre and its fifth floor Off-Broadway theater (136 seats) as Theatre 500.
The festival is produced by Roy Arias and curated by noted director Alfred Preisser (www.alfredpreisser.com), who has staged over 40 productions in New York and regionally and was Founding Artistic Director of The Classical Theatre of Harlem.
The Times Square International Theater Festival is dedicated to work that challenges the status quo, exhibits artistic excellence and manifests invention and innovation in all of its aspects. Its mission is to provide an affordable venue for an assortment of plays and performance pieces that will not otherwise be seen in the doorstep of Broadway, offering companies of reduced budget but great artistic merit the opportunity to show their art in the heart of the theater capital of the world. The Festival also aims to inspire communication between theater companies from across the globe and to facilitate them to gain insight into each others' work. From August 15 to November 30, 2011 the festival accepted submissions from all kinds of stage plays, including musicals and new or classic pieces and twenty pieces were selected for presentation.
The lineup includes productions from Ukraine, Argentina/Spain, Germany, Italy/USA and Cuba. The state of the world economy, barriers to travel and the high cost of temporary housing in New York made it impractical to assemble a lineup of exclusively foreign plays. But it was possible to maintain a multinational scope by opening the festival to productions with an international vision, even if they were from the USA, and to artists living here who have some international influence.
The Festival includes 15 fully staged works, of which two are world premieres and five are New York premieres. Most shows will be performed three times in the week of the fest. There will be a mixture of musicals, movement theater works, choreographic works, dramas, family shows and solo shows. There will also be two staged readings and a workshop in Lecoq Technique (writing and adapting through improvisation, using mime and pantomime).
The festival will be an annual event with more offerings and longer runs planned for 2013. Separate from this festival, the Little Times Square Theatre and Theatre 500 will also be increasing their curated programming.
All full productions of the festival are $18 in advance, $20 at the door; $12 seniors and students. A festival pass is available for $99. Staged readings are $10. The Box office is SMARTTIX (212) 868-4444, www.smarttix.com. The festival website is www.tsitf.com.
